This is another first for me, an online serial, that is hosted by Big World Network, and written by the talented Tof Eklund. While it is not a book in the "traditional" sense I greatly encourage fans of Fantasy and Romance to give it closer look. parts are a wee racy for mainstream romance, but the high sensuality that builds to it should most certainly be experienced.
The land of Thrycae is immediately explained as superstitious, closed minded and oppressive. Laws of decency force the fairer sex, from servants to the crown, to keep both their hands and hair hidden under gloves and hoods at all times. The mere touching of a man by a woman's bare hands is a death sentence. Maiden Yelena, is the voice of the main tale, she is a "Sister of the Order" in other words a witch, living in a place where witchcraft is punishable by death, her task is to discover the great "wyrding" or destiny that is has caught the Order's attention they have sensed that something great is stirring.
After passing tests which deem her "talents" as not that of witchcraft, Yelena finds herself in the employ of King Lycius and Queen Theobel. She is a healer of great talents, put in the position of saving Prince Kaye from the incompetence of the doctors of the palace and an illness which leaves him without the use of his legs. She nurses this young boy (11 years old)and a bond is formed as she realizes that he is the epicenter of the wyrding, while it is not his great destiny, he will be the key to another's.
Kaye grows into a strapping man, learning to use his crutches and leg braces with stealth and skill until in an attempt to please his father he manages to get himself trampled by a horse, which he had no business riding. Yelena heals him, publicly, laying bare hands on the lad, forcing the Queen to step in for her "carnal indecency." Thus saving her from cruel punishment. Rumors and whispers follow the Maiden through out the palace, she manages to shrug them off, but Kaye is now at an age where his interest in women has flourished and he begs Yelena to be his tutor in this as well.
She is dumbstruck, embarrassed and at once uneasy, but tries to explain it in a way that he main gain knowledge without practice. Then Yelena has a dream which makes her realize that in all of her teaching, she is in fact more than attracted to Kaye. Tensions build, as the two try to hide their passions for the other. But those who know them, Geoff, Kaye's guardsman, and Lilly a servant who spends much time with Yelena, can see what they have tried so hard to hide. Lilly is encouraging, Geoff worries. As does Yelena, her dreams becoming increasingly more erotic in nature, have lead her to believe that if she and Kaye submit to their feelings she will indeed become pregnant, and one of them will die...
She fights her feelings even as Kaye pursues her, the love affair has begun, soft touches the slightest caress of bare hands through lace gloves... Yelena realizes that she can no longer distinguish the wyrd, her passions for Kaye have her blinded to the omens that surround them. They two can no longer hide from one another and succumb to their needs in a flurry of kisses.
The tale breaks here. moving into a series of shorter tales of erotic bliss introducing new characters who each connect to the lives of Kaye, Yelena and Geoff. A perspective change which leaves you aching to find out what happens next.
Then it returns to Kaye and Yelena, tumbling and fumbling in a storage room, only to be caught by Geoff, just before they can seal their love. Unhappily Geoff rescues them from being discovered and agrees to help them, if only to keep them from being found out. But tragedy ensues when next the would be lovers meet, seems destiny will stop at nothing to sending the warnings. There is no lack for suspense and erotic thrills as the chapters progress, but I leave them to you to discover...
