The 131 Preview Review Presents
Well it happened, I broke my own rule. With this novel I went beyond the 131st page! Way beyond, and I hadn't even realized it happened. There I was about four hours in and I look down on my tablet and realized I was nearly 75% through the book! I had only planned on going to chapter 14, but I couldn't pry this one out of my own hands...
A Touch of Betrayal is the fourth novel in The Everly Gray Adventures, when I agreed to read it I had no idea that it was part of a series, if I had I would have asked to read the first as opposed to starting with the latest release. I would have asked, and I would have been WRONG...
This book could very well stand alone.
Having not read the previous works I was amazed that the author was able to set the scenes up in such a way that I didn't Need to read them(although I want to) in order to follow the twists of the storytelling. For this I wanted to Congratulate L.J. Charles. It is rare to see an author who can recap in such an effortless way...
A Touch of Betrayal, is a tale that at once has you feeling for it's heroine the newly married Mrs. Everly Grey Hunt. A woman whose Psychometric gifts have once again put her on the path to discovering her destiny. We find out that her family home was blown to smithereens in a previous tale, which has her "ESP fingers" itching to delve into the secrets the charred remains may hold. She burns for the answers to who murdered her parents, and just what has happened to her pseudo-grandparents Millie and Harlen, who were also the caretakers of her parents estate before it went BOOM!
It all starts with a cryptic phone call from Tynan Pierce, (a former 3 letter agency spy) about her biological grandfather, which sends Everly to the estate and down into the cold hard ground as bullets wiz by her head. Like Mighty Mouse Tynan pops out of nowhere and saves the day, only to aid her in the discovery of a few metacarpals, after the police have their way with the estate Tynan not so subtly hijacks Everly and her car putting her on a private jet to Hawaii, the last known location of her grandfather, Harlen and Millie.
Unhappy about the situation, but unable to put a stop to it, Everly tries to make the best, fighting her internal feelings for the seductively quiet Pierce, by trying to keep her mind on her husband and the task at hand so she let's her fingers go on a walk about of the luxury jet. Only to find that the body on her property belonged to another agent, the visions of she and Pierce are enough to show Everly as decidedly jealous even as she internally claims otherwise.
They say curiosity killed the cat, and in Everly's case it's damn near true, as her snooping around caused her to find a bit of candy, and her partaking of it lands her poisoned. Again Tynan swoops in and the next time Everly opens her eyes they are in Hawaii and she is in for the worst news of her adult life.
No sooner than she is reunited with her dearest friend Annie(An Ex-sniper turned wife and mother) she finds that the spy in her can not be squashed. Loving her as they do, they are devastated to have to tell Everly what they have discovered. That Mitchell, Everly's husband is not the man she knows. He has a life that he has been trying to hide. One which has left Everly questioning everything.
Loyalties are stretched, and she doesn't know what to believe. .. She is adamant that she will find out the truth of things, in denial about what her friends have found. Until Mitchell shows up and confirms every suspicion.
Now Everly's heart is torn out, tossed across the floor and covered in dust, but with this news comes the revelation that her parents deaths, may be linked to an Asian gang called the Wah Ching and their insane leader Xifeng. That the very people who hired Mitchell to come into her life, have been hunting Millie and Harlan and are determined to take Everly.
Mitchell's lies were to protect her, Annie's truths are to protect her, Tynan's silence... Well you get the point, and so has Everly. Her resolve is stronger than ever, with her family at stake she will not stand idle any longer, she will be her own White Knight...
